Child support cases in Washington State are handled by the Superior Court in the county where the child lives. If parents live in different counties, the case is typically filed in the county where the child primarily resides.
To file for child support in any Washington county you will need:
Timeline varies by county and case complexity. Administrative orders through DSHS typically take 3-6 months. Court orders through Superior Court typically take 30-90 days depending on whether both parties agree on the amount.
Yes. Either parent can request a modification if there has been a substantial change in circumstances — typically defined as a 15% or more change in net income under RCW 26.09.170 or more change in either parent's income, or a significant change in the child's needs or residential schedule. The same WSCSS worksheet is used for modifications as for initial orders.
If a parent fails to pay court-ordered child support in Washington, the Division of Child Support (DCS) through DSHS can enforce payment through wage garnishment, license suspension, tax refund interception, and contempt of court proceedings. Contact your county court or DSHS for enforcement assistance.
Yes. All 39 Washington counties use the same Washington State Child Support Schedule (RCW 26.19) and the 2026 economic table. The formula does not vary by county. Only filing fees and procedures differ.
DSHS administrative orders are handled by the Division of Child Support without going to court — faster but less flexible. Court orders through Superior Court allow more customization and are required for complex situations involving deviations or parenting plan disputes.
